How to Draw an Ankylosaurus
We will learn how to draw an Ankylosaurus easily and simply. An easy guide to drawing a dinosaur with step-by-step instructions.
For this tutorial on how to draw an ankylosaurus, we will be drawing a portrait using pencils, a fountain pen, and crayons. We will want to make sure that we have an HB pencil for the beginning stages of the tutorial, where we work out the basic forms. We will also want to make sure we have an eraser for any little mistakes we make along the way.
Ankylosaurus was a large lizard, 5’6 (1.68 m) high and 16′ (4.85 m) long. The body of this dinosaur was wide and squat. It moved on four large legs, and looked flattened from above and even looked a bit like a turtle, only it had a long tail with a powerful bone mace at the end. Another feature of the appearance of the ankylosaurus is thick armor made of bone plates and spikes. They grew into the skin and reliably protected the dinosaur from the claws and fangs of various predators. Scientists believe that each ankylosaurus has plates on its back formed unique patterns by which he could be distinguished as a person by facial features and lines on his arms.
The most interesting and spectacular part of the massive body of the ankylosaurus is the thickening at the end of the powerful tail. Such a “mace” was about 2-3 times as wide as a human head. It consisted of dense bone outgrowths and was a reliable weapon that the lizard used to protect itself from enemies.
Whether you’re an experienced artist or a beginner, this drawing experience will be both fun and rewarding. So, grab your pencils and paper, and let’s bring your ankylosaurus to life!

How to Draw an Ankylosaurus
- Outline the body and head.
Use the example from the first step to help you outline a realistic head and upper body for your dinosaur drawing. The head should be round, the body large and massive, and the tail pointed.
- Outline the mouth to your sketch.
Using two U-shapes, draw the mouth of the ankylosaurus as in the example. Also in this step shows how to draw an eye.
- Add head details.
Draw protective plates on the dinosaur’s head and neck. Begin by drawing a large plate right on top of the head, then draw three small plates on the neck.
- Add spikes to the back.
Draw semicircular spikes on the back of the ankylosaurus. We got seven spikes on the back. In addition to the spikes, draw a line that divides the dinosaur’s body into two skin parts.
- Draw the back plates.
On the area of the entire back and tail, add protective plates, as shown in the example.
- Draw the side spikes.
Draw the lateral defensive spines of the ankylosaurus. There are six such spikes in our drawing.
- Draw the legs of the dinosaur.
Now draw the legs of the dinosaur, along with the feet.
- Detail dinosaur feet.
Draw curved lines that will create the claws of the dinosaur.
- Finalize your drawing.
To finalize your artwork, you need to color your dinosaur. You can color your Ankylosaurus using the same colors as we used in the example.
