Before beginning this guide, you likely have the impression that learning how to draw a basilisk is a difficult process reserved for only the most advanced artists. We hope to change your mind about this process by the end of our easy-to-follow guide when you will have a mythical and great looking basilisk drawing.
The word Basilisk itself is of Greek origin. Basiliskos means little king or prince. However, if we break this word into two, we get a snake king (basil—king, liskos—snake, small lizard, serpentine creature, reptile), known to culture from the 6th century BC. according to the works of Aristotle.
In general, there are two images of the basilisk, one image is a huge snake, and the other image is what you see in this drawing lesson. Together with the Roman conquests, the Roman culture, the successor of the Greek, also spread throughout Europe. Tales of the basilisk followed, mingling with local beliefs and transforming into the final culture. The black ibis was eventually replaced by the black rooster familiar to Europeans, retaining, however, the snake features.
Thus, the basilisk still remained a bird snake, but two main types or images can be distinguished: the classical one, which became the main one in Europe and took its place in the list of heraldic animals, as well as the second image, which looks like a lizard. In Harry Potter, we could see such an image of a basilisk.
